Are You Eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness?

\"\"

Are you a public employee such as a teacher or hospital worker?

Employed in public service, either through a government agency or a non-profit organization?

If so, you may be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and the PSLF Limited Waiver –– TAKE ACTION TODAY!

The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 (10 years) qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.

In October 2021, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced a change to PSLF program rules as a result of the COVID-19 emergency. For a limited time, borrowers may receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF.

If you have a Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans, Federal Perkins Loans, or other types of federal student loans that are not Direct Loans (for example, those from older loan programs, such as Federally Insured Student Loans [FISL] or National Defense Student Loans [NDSL]), you may be eligible to receive credit toward forgiveness through the U.S. Department of Education\’s PSLF Limited Waiver.

Borrowers who wish to participate must take action by October 31, 2022. Learn more about the PSLF Limited Waiver at: StudentAid.gov/pslfwaiver.

If you think you may be eligible, complete these steps by October 31, 2022:

  1. Verify your loan types at StudentAid.gov/aid-summary (log-in required), including loans with other servicers.
  2. Verify whether you have eligible period(s) of employment by completing Step 1 of the PSLF Help Tool at: StudentAid.gov/pslf/ .
  3. Consolidate your FFEL Program and/or Perkins loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan if you have eligible periods of employment. Important: you can\’t receive credit for payments on your FFEL Program loans if you consolidate after October 31, 2022. You can apply to consolidate through the U.S. Department of Education at: StudentAid.gov/app/launchConsolidation.action .
  4. Once you\’ve consolidated, you can apply for PSLF credit using the PSLF Help Tool at: StudentAid.gov/pslf/. This tool will generate a PSLF form, which you must have your employer(s) sign. You must then submit to FedLoan Servicing by October 31, 2022.
